Ralph McQuarrie

Ralph McQuarrie, adalah seorang seniman yang bekerja dalam pembuatan film Star Wars sebagai seorang ilutrator. Beliau meninggal pada usia 82 tahun, pada tanggal 3 Maret 2012.

Sebelum bekerja di projek film Star Wars bersama George Lucas, Ralph McQuarrie adalah seorang ilustrator untuk perusahaan Boeing dan menggambar animasi tentang program pendaratan Apollo di bulan untuk CBS.

Latar belakang pekerjaannya tersebut terbukti menjadi hal yang sangat tidak ternilai ketika bekerja sama dengan George Lucas sejak tahun 1975 dalam hal pembuatan episode-episode cerita fiksi ilmiah. Dan terbukti hasil imajinasinya membuat film Star Wars sangat mulus dalam hal gambaran-gambaran teknologi, dari episode ke episode penayangannya.

Dalam website Star Wars, George Lucas menulis:

Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘Do it like this.’
[...] In many ways, he was a generous father to a conceptual art revolution that was born of his artwork, and which seized the imaginations of thousands and propelled them into the film industry. In that way, we will all be benefiting from his oeuvre for generations to come. Beyond that, I will always remember him as a kind and patient, and wonderfully talented, friend and collaborator.

Keindahan imajinasi Ralph McQuarrie

Ralph McQuarrie tidak hanya menjadi biang keindahan film fiksi ilmiah Star Wars namun juga menjadi orang dibelakang layar atas kesuksesan dan imajinasi pesawat dan kehidupan luar angkasa dalam film-film yang sangat kondang seperti Battlestar Galactica (film seri di televisi), Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Star Trek IV: The Journey Home, *batteries not included, Jurassic Park, dan Cocoon yang mengantarkan McQuarrie mendapatkan penghargaan Academy Award.
